The Frame Tale: MORANA's Indian world of stories within stories

The Frame Tale is the eighth world of MORANA's saga, the Indian realm of the Panchatantra and the great epics, where the same cracked wheel is met by a tradition that has always told its truths as stories nested inside other stories. Here a tale opens to reveal another tale, and another inside that, and the returning dead are one more story being told within the frame.

The world and its fables

This is the country of the frame-narrative: the Panchatantra, whose animal fables are set inside a teacher's larger lesson; the Jataka tales of past lives; the epic frames of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, in which characters pause to tell each other stories; and the riddling cycle of Vikram and the Vetala, where a corpse-spirit answers each tale with a question. Indian storytelling perfected the tale-within-a-tale, the structure where meaning deepens the further in you go.

Its place in the saga

By the eighth world, the Turning has reached the subcontinent, and this people meet the returning dead through their genius for nested narrative: the great crisis is understood as a story being told inside the story of the world. Where the Arabian world ranks its wishes and the Norse world schedules its doom, this world layers its meanings. It is the saga's chapter of depth-within-depth, the reminder that the ten-world story is itself a tale being told about all the others.

The signature: the Inner Tale

The eighth world's signature idea deepens the text of the game rather than adding a board zone. It introduces a second, indented condition nested inside a card's own effect, one that fires only when a public story-condition is met, and on the greatest figures these tales nest several deep, a fable within a fable within a fable. Where the second world's rule-of-three was a single flat threshold, this is layered and conditional, the combinatorial-depth world where reading a card means reading the story inside it.
