Fimbulvetr: MORANA's Norse world of the foretold end

Fimbulvetr, the Ragnarok cycle, is the fifth world of MORANA's saga, the Norse realm of the Eddas where the end of the world is not feared but foretold, written down, and kept to its schedule. Here the cracked wheel meets a people who already know how the story ends, and choose to meet it standing. The name is the great winter that, in the myths, comes before the end.

The world and its myth

This is the country of the Poetic and Prose Eddas: Odin trading an eye for wisdom, the Norns spinning fate at the roots of the world-tree, the wolf Fenrir straining at his chain, the long killing winter of Fimbulvetr, and Ragnarok itself, the doom in which gods and monsters fall together. Norse myth is unique in its calm certainty about the ending: the seeress recites the whole apocalypse in advance, and the heroes ride to it anyway.

Its place in the saga

By the fifth world, the Turning has reached the North, and the Norse read the returning dead as one more sign of the foretold doom. Where the Greek world stands trial for its pride, the Norse world keeps an appointment with the end. It is the saga's chapter of fated courage: a people who cannot avert the ending and so measure themselves by how they face it, which gives the whole ten-world story its spine of resolve.

The signature: the Doom Track

Fimbulvetr's signature idea is a hard, shared clock that schedules the ending. A public track advances as the mighty fall and as the game stalls, and when it fills, it forces an apocalyptic resolution that neither player can avoid. It splits the world into two ways to play: race the doom, or hold it back. Where earlier worlds add stakes or chance, this one adds an ending, the foretold apocalypse made into a counter both players can read.
